UP, UP AND AWAY

Mica Lamb

When is a t-shirt not a t-shirt?

When it's part of a manufacturing revolution taking on the staggering problem of textile waste.

Did you know that the world now generates so much waste fabric that we can mass-produce garments from factory leftovers? But it's not a simple process. Watch this short video to learn more about how it's done and meet our friend Reet Aus, ethical fashion pioneer, upcycler and inventor of the Upshirt.

Upshirts are made using the pieces of fabric that are routinely discarded during production - the so called 'waste'  that normally gets chucked on the factory floor and thrown in the trash. Pieces of high quality cotton jersey that have been cleverly engineered into uber cool little t-shirts.

Compared to standard manufacturing, each 'Upmade' garment saves, on average 91% water, 81% energy and creates 80% less CO2.

Our newest collection of kid's Upshirts are made from striped organic cotton. The large arrow is patch-worked into the front and Reet Aus' signature tiny arrow can be found embroidered on the back right bottom corner.

It’s time for us to upcycle our humanity by producing and buying in ways that do more good than harm.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS

Mica Lamb

Ok, so it's International Women's Day and y'know, there's work to be done. For starters only 21% of the UK STEM workforce are women, yet girls routinely trounce boys academically - and that includes STEM subjects. While we sit down and cogitate on what on earth is going on, we're offering some early days inspiration for girls with our super duper fun chemistry print togs from the lovely peeps at 4funkyflavours. Feast your eyes.

Lion Of Leisure Dog Tee: I Can Smell a Party (so can we!) £22

Lion Of Leisure Dog Tee: I Can Smell a Party (so can we!) £22

Our new Lion of Leisure order has landed and we are super duper excited!

The new Dog Tee: I Can Smell a Party has already proved really popular amongst dog lovers (us included) and party goers (us included). We also nabbed a few of the last Dino: Pleased to Eat You print on Aqua slub for all the dinosaur enthusiasts out there (see pic below), and we're completely and absolutely in love with this Deer print - the antlers spell out the word PEACE.

 Deer: Peace £22

We were just a tad cheeky and asked Lion of Leisure to print us the Wolf onto a black tee so this one's bespoke, dahling. We think it looks awesome and will be popular with those who howl at the moon (you know who you are!).

 Wolf Tee: Wwooooooooo £22

Wolf Tee: Wwooooooooo £22

Fun fact: The Dog and Wolf both come in Lion of Leisure's new 'big kid' size: 12-14 years.

And finally we have the long sleeve Bat Tee: Just Hangin' printed on ochre slub. We're feeling the mustard this spring. Speaking of spring, we've already decided to use our Lion of Leisure organic cotton bags for easter egg hunting. They're more eco, tres stylish and the eggs won't fall out. Win win win.

BACK TO LIFE

Mica Lamb

Best of luck to every little-un starting primary school (and mums/dads/carers - it's a big old day), to each and every tween starting secondary school (ARGH!!) and all the kiddos simply going back to the same old school. It's a bit of a shock after a long, super-fun (if not hot) summer, and to us, the biggest shock was going back to black. And grey.

The odd Hi-de-Hi blazer (you know who you are, @COLA_Shoreditch) notwithstanding, it's off with your summer togs and on with yer sober suiting. Though we're not huge fans of uniform we do see it's practical, democratic and all that stuff - but where's the fun in that? And when did the gods of education decide that kids should dress up in suits. And why, when global warming is high on the educational agenda is there nothing sustainable about the clothes they have to wear. GARGH! Anyway, we'll put a sock in all that for now and, instead of celebrating back to school with sober PE leggings and muted tights, we're giving planet-friendly layering and colour a big old shout out. It's funny old weather in September. 22-degrees one day, 15 the next, a cosy cardi can make the difference between toasty and cold-y. Take our 3 birds tee. Bright and cheery. Cosy it up under our Coral cotton cardi. Lovely!

Then take an upshirt. Any upshirt.

And when the wind blows, pop it under this retro beauty.

If you're embracing autumn mists and all that biz, try our Deer in the Woods top, under our fab Mr Fox jumper and over cool pale jeans or our lovely moleskin autumn shorts.

In short, everything our dudes and yours need for a cosy, colourful autumn.

Happy Earth Day! Please Buy Less.

Mica Lamb

Yes that's right. We're a shop and we're urging you to buy less. But y'know, better to buy one thing made to last than fast fashion - especially given it's the second most polluting industry on earth - oil wins that contest - and an industry responsible for 7 tonnes of clothes landfilled every 10 minutes in the UK alone. Which looks like this, by the way.

 From 1 Million Women

Fast fashion prices might be low but it feels too high a cost.

The good news?

Every time we extend a piece of clothing's life by just three months we reduce it's carbon, waste and water footprint by an incredible 10%.

Luckily we specialise in planet-friendly, way-cool togs made to last - hand-me-downs of the future. Check these beauties out.

Unisex Jeans by The Fableists now only £20

Unisex Jeans by The Fableists now only £20

London-based brand The Fableists make super-stylish ethical clobber, using organic materials, designed with longevity in mind.

Most of it's unisex to be handed down to any sibling, cousin or friend, and they're way sturdy - so, many years of tree climbing and bike riding ahead.

These jeans won't go out of style and will age nicely like proper thick denim does. Buy a size too big and rock XL turn-ups for a year, that way you'll get two years per child owner. On sale right now - that's £20 well spent.

4funkyflavours also use clever design to give their kidswear a nice long life. Sleeves have extra length and hems are low to allow room to grow.

4funkyflavours love an elastic waistband: so skirts grow with you and jumpsuits sit baggy on the hip or snug in the waist - and look fab for several inches of upward trajectory.

We can vouch from personal experience the dresses look super cute a couple years on layered over skinny jeans, and still in good nick for a second life via ebay.
